Just A Hug

January 21st is National Hugging Day.

Rev. Kevin Zaborney, a student of psychology, came up with this National Hugging Day idea, which has been celebrated worldwide on January 21st since 1986. There is even an official website for the holiday!

Ecclesiastes 3:1,5: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. . .a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.”

The front of one American Greetings Forget Me Not card reads, “A hug is love wrapped up in a warm little package.”

Many stories in the Bible tell of people hugging and embracing one another. One of the most well-known is the story of the prodigal son returning home to his father (Luke 15:11-24). Please read Genesis 29:12-13; 48:9-10; Ruth 1:11-14; Mark 10:13-16 and Acts 20:1, 9-11.

In honor of National Hugging Day, I thought I would share a poem I wrote some years ago entitled, “Just A Hug“:

Just A Hug

I’ve been working all day
Just toiling away
I’ve endured insults, strife and snubs
All I need to help me indeed
Is not much
A little hug.

It’s amazing to think
What a touch can do
In a world so naked of love
There’s friendship in a handshake
There’s warmth in a kiss
But oh!
There’s power in a hug.

Our world would improve
More peace would ensue
If more bodies and arms embraced
You would be surprised
To see the change in lives
If hugging became
The practice
Of the Race.

“And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them.” Acts 20:1

Hug someone today. You’ll both feel better.

Turning On The Power: An Encouraging Poem

Posted in Encouragement, Encouraging Poems at 9:38 pm by Administrator

Power is a word so often used
By so many in our world today
There’s power to change, power to influence
Power to go or to stay.

There’s the power of money, and the power of charm
The power of beauty and good looks
There’s the power of History, the power of Thought
The power of ideas that steam from books.

There’s the power of a tear, the power of a smile
The power of a kiss and warm embrace
There’s the power of a Dream, the power of a cause
There’s the power painted on a hungry face.

There’s power in Rest, and power in Silence
There’s power in nature being free
There’s power in Pain, power in Joy
There’s power in the thunderous sea.

But by far, the Power I seek the most
    Is the power
    The wondrous power
    The great power
    The Holy Ghost.

    Acts 1:8

Excerpt from Evangelist Manuel Scott Jr’s book of poems entitled Turning On The Power (Poetry Of Life And The Spirit), 1991.

    I Choose The Sunshine

Here is an encouraging poem by Evangelist Manuel Scott Jr.

    I Choose The Sunshine

Amid life’s choices I rest my case

Though darkness has left me half blind

I vote to cast my fate with light

For Friend, I choose the Sunshine.

Although the clouds are dreary and grey

With cold rain falling most of the time

What a joy it is to wait for the rainbow

Dear Traveler, I choose the Sunshine.

It is no secret that strife is real

That heartbreak plagues you and I

How easy it would be to despair helplessly

But instead, I choose the Sunshine.

To choose the Sunshine is to choose tomorrow

It is to choose the promise of a new day

It is to side with Hope and trust in Faith

    It is to allow Grace

    To have its way.

And so, Dear Friend, I must confess

That this has become clear in my mind

That whenever I choose the Son

    I amazingly

    The Sunshine.

    John 3:19; 8:36
